Nailing the Porthole

Nailing the Porthole

This week, Adam dons a Swedish accent to help a guy insulate his ceiling. He also explains how to properly put up a fence and talks to a guy setting up his vacation home in Panama.

Show Summary

Adam has Katie read another letter sent in to the show. This time the letter is from Sweden, and Adam tries his best accent as he discusses the 3 types of insulation you can use in the attic. Another writer is concerned about using a pressure washer to remove the paint from some very old bricks.

Jumping to the phone lines, Adam talks to a very ambitious guy trying to tear out his shower tub and replace it with a shower enclosure. Adam also speaks to a caller who is trying to put up a fence for his in-laws, and is trying to figure out how to deal with the trees in the surrounding pathway.

The next caller has a question about hanging drywall, and is also considering working on the plumbing as well. Adam explains how to remove a toilet, but suggests to the caller to leave the copper pipe work to the professionals. As the show wraps up, Adam takes a call from a guy who’s wife is working on tile and is afraid of cracking them, and the final caller is trying to repair two different toilets he messed up. If all else fails, Adam suggests he pees in the sink.

Be sure to ALWAYS use a special primer designated for specifically galvinized substrates. For example galvgrip from Sherwin Williams. It’s one of those things where just “any” primer will NOT work, and paint failure will ensue.

Last time I pressure-washed my mother was watching.

Also, it was funny that a Guy from Sweden asked a Guy from Southern California about his advice on moisture problems. It’s a small world, small and retarded.

The tape measure is on the metric side, centimeters, if I’m not mistaken.

The scale is hard to figure, but I think metric is a good guess, because if Imperial were the mark, they would have designed the tab differently. In the picture it obscures the “1”.

I was listening to an older show where the guy was asking about hanging vinyl siding. The two biggest mistakes people make are: putting the nails in too tight on the nailing fins (float your nails about 1/32-1/16″), and not allowing for expansion and contraction of the siding between joints (about 1/4″ when weather is above 45 degrees and 3/8″ when below). You will actually hear the siding pop like popcorn if the nails are too tight when the weather fluctuates between hot and cold, as well as making the siding look “wavy”. Also, I laughed my ass off when Adam was doing his Swedish impression- It sounded so authentic…
