Drainage is a B****

Drainage is a B****

This week, Adam discusses the importance of toilet height, and helps a caller creatively add value back into his house.

Show Summary

Detached Garage

Adam opens the show discussing what you need to look out for when finding a contractor. He says that you can do everything in your power not to get screwed, but it’s still a risk you have to take. He also has an email read to him where he helps someone wanting to install a urinal in their garage without any plumbing.

Pony Wall

Adam then jumps to the phones and talks to a caller who wants to install lights in her concrete wall, but is afraid to just start digging. Adam talks to her about the different kinds of conduit, and even has her go outside to take measurements for him. Later, Adam helps a caller trying to fill some nail holes, and contemplates the relationship between toilet height and personal success.

Interior Decorating Mirrors

The next caller has a gas leak running through a slab of concrete, and Adam talks to him about the importance of replacing the lines with the right kind of pipes. Adam then talks to a caller about how to cheaply and creatively add value back into his house, and suggests he installs some mirrors to open up the space. The show wraps with Adam talking to a guy who’s got doors that won’t stay half-open.

I miss the days of being able to listen to the show. Reading the description while flipping through pictures; not as much fun as the nasally drone. I paid my neighbor $5 to read it to me instead while driving to Lowes, but he kept getting stuck on the bigger words like ‘urinal’. He’s only six, to be fair.

I was thinking about toilets the other day, as the bathroom smelled like urine splatter. It’s unavoidable; the bowl is too low. It’s not about aim — it’s physics.

So I thought to myself, “women really got the better end of the toilet deal.” Then I realized who it is who cleans toilets and bathrooms. Ahh… such genius, those Founding Fathers.

Jamie from Boise, here’s what you do:

Pull a hinge pin or two from each problem door (while it’s still hanging) and then tap, tap, tap on an empty “barrell” or two, on each hinge. Juussst enough to put them slightly out of alignment, but not so much that you can’t drive the hinge pin back in. Now, after you drive the pins back in you’ll have enough friction in those hinges to keep the doors from swinging so freely. It absolutely works!

BX cable is a brand name of Sprague Electric (G.E. Division) in the early 1900s. At the time they only had one type of cable called “Product A”. When they were inventing a new cable the engineers called it “Product B Experimental” or “BX” for short. The cable was widely successful and the name stuck.

The generic name is “Armored Cable (AC)”.

As one of the “bitches” who listens to Ace on the House, I hesitate to post, but I do have a five dollar solution to the caller with doors that need a rock to stay open. In the hinge section of any major home improvement store, there are magnetic door stops that hold the door open and easily pull shut. All you need is a woman-proof (electric) screwdriver. Easy.

The woman caller trying to install lights on her stucco wall. Go to Home Depot and buy some solar lights on each of the posts. They are cheap, easy to install, no wiring and they turn on automatically.
    Problem solved.
No drilling no wires no hassles.

Those don’t provide much light compared to, say, low-voltage lighting. They do need new batts ever year or so too. Not a hopeless solution, but maybe not the look she’s going for.
