Show Summary

Adam and Ray welcome Nick Offerman back to the show (his original appearance was the first OTH episode ever). The guys chat with Nick about his canoe building experience, and the zen of making paddles. They also respond to a couple of wood-related emails. The first is from a writer concerned about the huge storage shelf in his garage, and the other wants to know how to fix the rotting eaves under his roof.

Moving to the phones, the first caller has separating drywall, and doesn’t know the best way to repair the pocket that has formed. They also speak with a caller about replacing a hot water heater, and another who is tired of replacing his toilet tank every 6 months. As the show wraps up, the guys discuss some fun experiences with a bidet, and talk briefly about the studio’s upcoming laminate work.

@ Blake with rotting studs/bottom plate:

Instead of bleach (which, off the top of my head is something like 98% water, which is what your problem already is), try getting a jug of denatured alcohol at the Depot, or wherever. It’s good at killing mold spores and doesn’t add water to the problem area. Careful, as it’s flammable until it dries!

Right. I thought that cleaning it with bleach and closing it back up was a weak answer. And I’m a big fan of the podcast. Frankly, I’d cut out the section of bottom plate and replace the studs if only because I’d walk around my house every day after closing up the wall wondering if it spread. Plus, you’re already in the wall. You’re doing a repair no matter what you do.

Is that Ray Oldhafer or Mr. Furley from Three’s Company sitting effiminately cross-legged on the sofa? Jeesh. Go ahead and get yourself a silk scarf and a Greek fisherman’s cap to complete the ensemble.

the shoes probably have metal eyelets don’t microwave them. Freeze them, let the thaw, and freeze them again. If the mold thrives on warm and moist, send them to cold and dry. the twice is in case there are any cold activated spores (in socal the chances are very low).

To toilet guy. This may be too late, but you probably have hard water and just need a better ball-cock. If you search these on Amazon (link through Carolla) you can find some highly recommended ones that won’t piss out on you after a few months. If you have especially bad water, for about 20 bucks there are brass models that should effectively last forever. I had the same problem for a couple years, and it stopped abruptly when I stopped buying generic replacements from the box stores.

Love having Nick as a guest. He needs to come back again.

PS. Ace, Ray and Mr. Punisher,
I recently clicked through to Amazon for my last purchase. Just wanted to help keep the pirate ship afloat. Maybe it’ll help to buy some extra studs for the next project and the framing won’t look like a Picasso.

To deal with the mold issue, you want to place the object in a bag so that the mold doesn’t travel to anything else and then place in in the freezer to kill the mold. Then scrape the affected area with a small putty knife and vacuum to get the remaining residue. Suede is a bitch to get clean though…throw some silicagel packets in with your racing gear to keep the moisture under control.

Adam, all your stuff was wet because Ray pissed on it. You are immune to his scent now so you thought it was regular water. Try a microwave and freezing after, or whatever you did after he crapped in your Rams hat.
