Show Summary

Adam and Ray open the show discussing the importance of word of mouth. They also talk about the benefits of working for gay people, and the latest mishaps from Full Tard Gary. Next up, the guys respond to a video question about knocking out a retaining wall and replacing it with lava rocks. After that, an email question about creating a trench drain. As the show wraps up, the guys burn through calls dealing with garage doors, expansion soil, and a leaky Jacuzzi.

for the Massachusetts river driveway dude:
get the idiots to install another trench drain about 10 feet up from the garage door.
that way hopefully you cut in half the amount of water getting down to the trench drain right before the garage. that or try to find a bigger trench drain to replace your original.

What Mike Jones said, plus Ray. Bigger trench drain, further out from the door, but maybe you can’t rely on a passive flow to get rid of the water. Maybe you need to “lift” (pump) the water, to get it to move farther away, before falling harmlessly away from that area. Maybe your trying to passively drain into a nearby area that is also flooded, so nothing is happening.

“Retaining wall guy”, maybe an in-between solution. Bust out the top, visible portion of that concrete with a sledge hammer, just enough to get rid of most of it. Then put your lava rock on top and get on with your life. Be darned careful swinging that sledge! Absolutely wear eye protection, but also swing the hammer, as best you can, in a smooth line down from your head to toes. Don’t swing it like a baseball bat; you’ll pull a muscle or wrench your back. Know that it is gonna stop suddenly when it hits the concrete, so loosen up at the end of the swing, letting the hammer take the shock, not you.

    Lava rock guy,
Just bust it out flush with the wall and drive. Go rent a little Hilti or other kind of hammer drill, a 1/2″ masonry bit and perforate a line where you want it broke off. Then take a 3 or 4 lb sledge and give it a few good solid knocks. Should all come out in a few pieces. You’re too close to the ground and the house to use a normal 12″ disc cutter.

Driveway guy, the bump that adam discussed could be done over a longer distance. Go up from the gutter (end of driveway) at about 1/2 inch per foot for 10 feet, then slope down at the same grade to tie in to the driveway. This is 4% up then 4% down. If you need to go steeper, put another grade break about 5 or 10 feet back. Maximum grade on a driveway should be 14%. Trench drains ALWAYS clog. you have a grading issue

I love the linoleum/vinyl tiles on your studio floor. Just the right shade of orange and just the right shade of cerulean to work together, plus the maroon border and black stripes look great with the already unusual combination.

Ace, LOVE that checkerboard floor! At least it looks like orange/white on my screen. Go VOLS!
